The European Union has expressed its deep appreciation to member states who have co-sponsored the Resolution on the Situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar

EU said the resolution adopted on Wednesday (Nov) is the result of the cooperation between the EU and the OIC. “We welcome and appreciate this joint endeavour, which allows us to remind the world, through the General Assembly, that appalling crimes, including reported war crimes and crimes against humanity, have been committed against Rohingya and persons belonging to other minorities in Myanmar. “

These crimes, committed in particular after October 2016, require truth and accountability. Their root causes remain to be addressed.

The atrocities that have been taking place in Myanmar are a poignant reminder to all humanity.

The same military leadership who oversaw the crimes against the Rohingya is now leading the junta. The same military leadership staged the 1 February coup and is now reported to orchestrate the military build-up in the central and northwestern part of Myanmar, and give orders to the security and armed forces to kill, torture, imprison, employ sexual violence, including rapes, and shell villages, hospitals, and schools, reads the EU resolution.

All acts that are violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

The EU condemned in the strongest terms these acts and continues to call for immediate cessation of violence and for justice and accountability for human rights violations

The EU called for bringing the perpetrators to justice. The current situation in Myanmar also suppresses hopes for the voluntary, safe and dignified and sustainable return of more than 900,000 Rohingya who have found refuge in Bangladesh.

There is not on one side the question of the Rohingya and on the other side the repression of people opposing the military takeover; they are the two sides of the same bloodstained coin.

The strong language in the resolution, reflecting the recent deterioration of the overall human rights situation in Myanmar after the 1 February coup, confirms that.

The military coup on 1 February 2021 forcibly overthrew the civilian government in blatant violation of the will of the people, expressed by the 8 November 2020 elections, with important humanitarian, social, economic consequences.

The European Union reiterates its strong condemnation of the coup and of the grave human rights violations committed by the Myanmar armed forces against all the people of Myanmar since then, and wishes to express its unequivocal support for all the people of Myanmar, including Rohingya and other minorities, and their democratic aspirations and for the democratic transition in Myanmar.

This requires restoring and strengthening inclusive democratic institutions and processes, refraining from violence and arbitrary detentions, and ensuring respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The continued flow of arms into Myanmar also gravely undermine human rights and should be stopped immediately.

In this context, the EU welcomes the recent appointment of the new Special Envoy of the Secretary General on Myanmar, reiterates its full support to her mandate, and encourages her further engagement and inclusive dialogue with all relevant stakeholders.

The European Union continues to call for the immediate and full implementation of the commitments made at the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in April, setting out the “Five Point Consensus”.

The EU will continue to support ASEAN’s efforts to ensure a peaceful resolution of the current crisis that will ensure the country’s swift return to a democratic path.
